چکیده

The MINOS long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment is comprised of three calorimeters, a Near Detector at FNAL, a Far Detector at the Soudan mine in northern Minnesota, and a Calibration Detector in a test beam at CERN. The light produced in the interactions of neutrinos in the Near Detector at FNAL will be routed by optical fibres onto the pixels of Hamamatsu R5900-00-M64 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes. This article reports the measurements performed on 15 of these tubes to evaluate them for their use in MINOS.

Performance of Hamamatsu 64-anode photomultipliers for use with wavelength–shifting optical fibres

Hamamatsu R5900-00-M64 and R7600-00-M64 photomultiplier tubes will be used with wavelength–shifting optical fibres to read out scintillator strips in the MINOS near detector. We report on measurements of the gain, efficiency, linearity, crosstalk, and dark noise of 232 of these PMTs, of which 219 met MINOS requirements.

Characterization of a multianode photomultiplier tube for use with scintillating fibers to detect gamma rays

The performance of a multianode photomultiplier tube (MAPMT) with 64 anodes coupled to scintillating fibers has been examined. Such a detector system can be used in a pairproduction gamma-ray telescope as well as in other applications. The characteristics of these tubes (Hamamatsu R5900-00-M64) are presented including single photoelectron sensitivity, electrical and optical cross-talk, and dark...

Characterization of the New R5900 Hamamatsu Photomultiplier in Pisa

We report on a wide program of tests of the new conception Hama-matsu photomultiplier R5900. Fifteen of such photomultipliers have been characterized in Pisa testing their main parameters with a dedicated setup. Such a test program has been carried out in the framework of the study of a realistic prototype of the future ATLAS tile hadronic calorimeter (TILECAL).
